You may be wondering what powder coating all about and why you need to be using it to protect your metal. Powder coating is an advanced method of applying a decorative and protective finish to virtually any type of metal that can be used both by industry and consumers. It has been around since the 1960s and is used on a wide variety of products. Today powder coating represents about 16% of the total industrial finishing market. It is quickly becoming the preferred method for consumers to not only protect their metal items, but to add a decorative touch as well. Powder coating provides a uniform, durable, high quality and attractive finish.
Midstate Burglar Bars & Ironworks introduced our new Powder Coating services earlier this year. All of the burglar bars, security doors, air conditioner cages, entry gates, railings, fences and decorative column products that we manufacture in our Montgomery Alabama facilities are now powder coated. This results in all of our products having a more durable protected finish and allows your security products to hold up longer in the elements.
How Powder Coating WorksAs stated above, Powder coating is an advanced method of applying a decorative and protective finish to virtually any type of metal that can be used both by industry and consumers. The powder used in the process is a mixture of finely ground particles of pigment and resin, which electrostatically sprayed onto the surface to be coated. The charged powder particles adhere to the electronically grounded surfaces until the powder is heated and fused into a smooth coating in the curing oven.
Benefits of Powder CoatingCost Effective—The greatest benefit of powder coating has to do with efficiency and overspray. The average transfer efficiency of powder coating is 60-70%. You may think this is not the best, but any over spray is collected and reused, meaning there is little to no waste. When compared to other coating methods such as conventional paint, the transfer efficiency is only 30-35%. Also, about 50% of paint evaporates without any means of reusing the over spray. The base product for powder coating is also cheaper than conventional paint.
Environmentally Friendly—There are many environmental advantages to powder coating as well. Since there are no solvents or volatile organic compounds (VOCs), there is no damage done to the environment when the powder coating is applied. Conventional paint contains chemicals that are harmful to the environment including ozone depletion and producing hazardous waste.
Durability—Powder coating provides a protective finish that is much more durable than conventional paint. As stated above, because of the high cross-link density created by powder coating, the molecular chains are harder to breakdown, making the finish harder and more durable. Powder coating protects some of the biggest industrial machinery as well as household items that you used on a daily basis.
